Antonov Mriya- World's largest cargo plane
The Antonov An-225 Mriya is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was
designed by the Soviet Union's Antonov Design Bureau in the 1980s. The An-225's
name, Mriya means "Dream" (Inspiration) in Ukrainian. It is powered
by six turbofan engines and is the longest and heaviest airplane ever built,
with a maximum take-off weight of 640 tonnes.It also has the largest wingspan
of any aircraft in operational service."Specially built to undertake
transcontinental route airlifting load between 180-230 tonnes, the aircraft
will be coming in to Hyderabad from Turkmenistan."
The plane had the first flight in early 1988 and entered service in
1989. It's first flight took 75 minutes. After the cancellation of the
Buran space program, the only An-225 built was stored in spring 1994, and it's
engines were used for An-124s. In 2001 the aircraft was made airworthy again,
and made it's new first flight on May 7.
Quick Facts:
1.Powered by six turbofan engines, it is able to carry up to 250 tonnes
of cargo, which is equivalent to the average weight of 52 mature elephants.
2.There is only one operational AN-225 in the world.
3.Ukrainian plane manufacturer Antonov developed the AN-225 during the
Cold War in the 1980's to airlift (in a piggyback fashion) the Buran spacecraft
for the Soviet space program.
4.The AN-225 has set over 200 world records, including airlifting the
world's heaviest cargo, and the world's longest cargo.
5.The landing gear system has 32 wheels.
